Academic Record

Professor Kerr trained in Medicine at Aberdeen University in Scotland. After spending time at Yale University in the United States he was appointed to his current position as Consultant Physician at Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre in the South of the UK.

Current Jobs

As well as working as a full-time physician in the UK National Health Service, Professor Kerr is also Editor of Diabetes Digest and until recently was Managing Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology (www.journalofdst.org). He is also a regular blogger for the BMJ (www.bmj.com).

Reputation

His clinical unit has an international reputation in the area of technology (insulin pump therapy and glucose sensing) and diabetes care. His research interests include clinical diabetes, the role of technology and the new social media in diabetes care and understanding the impact of hypoglycemia for people living with diabetes. He has published more than 200 research papers.

New Ventures

Shortly Professor Kerr will be launching a new venture with colleagues from the UK and San Francisco. www.Mylyfe.me will be a web-based program of physical, psychological and social strength training for breast cancer survivors.

Outside Activities

Professor Kerr still manages to grind out the occasional victory at squash but his golf handicap is stuck at 18. Most fun is had in educating his neighbors, friends and colleagues about the historical and continuing dominance of the Celts (Scots) over the Anglo-axons in most aspects of life!

Alissa studied for her Bachelor of Arts at The University of Winchester in 2005, after completing A-Levels. Since then she’s created her own business of which she is now managing director.

Reputation

Alissa is a full time writer, blogger (http://juvenile-diabetes.blogspot.com) and YouTube partner (http://www.youtube.com/notjustapples)  – she is an active member of the Diabetic Online Community. She’s had Type 1 diabetes since 1998, and has been using an insulin pump since 2001 – she’s also travelled a lot around Europe and the world, and has much advice to share on the realities of travelling with diabetes.

Ventures

She has just published her first cookbook (Healthy Breakfast Recipes), and is in the middle of writing her next book about Living with Type 1 Diabetes. She aims to inspire other diabetics out there to stay positive and keep informed of how best to manage their diabetes. Alissa loves making new videos and blog posts to help diabetics discuss and learn about diet, glucose management and travel advice.

Outside Activities

More often than not you can find her in the kitchen rustling up some tasty family treats, walking her cocker spaniel Bruno, or weeding up at her veggie patch. She loves to travel whenever she gets the opportunity, and loves seeing new places and meeting new people.
